The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations says livestock is the leading cause of climate change creating roughly 7,516 million tons of CO2e emissions per year. Worldwatch Institute recalculated this estimate to include the deforestation from animal agriculture to arrive at the estimate of 32,564 million tons per year. That is 51% of annual global emissions.
According to research at John Hopkins University, “If global trends in meat and dairy intake continue, global mean temperature rise will more than likely exceed 2 degrees Celsius, even with dramatic emissions reductions across non-agricultural sectors.” A report published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) earlier this year acknowledged that a vegan diet has the greatest greenhouse gas mitigation potential.
The single greatest action a person can make to reduce their environmental footprint is to switch to a plant-based diet 🌱
